The stylized scarab, a symbol of ancient Egypt, originates as a lowly beetle which also emerges in these poems as a mode of transportation, a hippie-era Volkswagen, before weaving through ancient Hindu and Buddhist texts and on to the present. Thus, Ripples in a Bejeweled Prayer Flag move with the invisible current that reflects the scarab’s ability to venture into the timeless underworld and safely return to the air, even where a Tibetan prayer flag flutters.
